Shalom
families and friends! Here is the latest news from our classroom.
Literacy
Our
Open Court story this week was Corduroy , by Don Freeman.
The children truly enjoyed this classic tale of the bear who wanted
to be loved and to have a home.
We
reviewed the sound of “long i” spelled -igh and practiced reading
and writing compound words during our phonics lessons. We learned
about the use of quotation marks in writing and the rules for where
these punctuation marks belong,
Finally,
our vocabulary work focused on homographs. Homographs are words
that are spelled the same way, but are pronounced differently and
have different meanings. For example: bow (a pretty knot), bow (to
bend forward); dove (past tense of dive), dove (a bird).
Math
We
studied the different ways to form equations in a fact family. For
example, with the numbers 5, 7, 12, possible true equations include:
7=12-5, 5+7=`12, 12-7=5, 12=7+5, We also practiced telling time.
Theme
We
continued to learn more about maps this week. We are now learning
about the continents and oceans of the world. We focused on North
and South America and the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
