Happy Thanksgiving families and friends! Here is the latest news from our classroom.

Literacy

Our Open Court story was called The Butterfly House , by Eve Bunting. In this story, a little girl saves a larva from being eaten by a blue jay and learns how to care for the larva until it becomes a butterfly. It reminded us of what we learned when we did the same thing at the beginning of the school year.

We reviewed the sounds of “long a” and “long e” during our phonics lessons. We also learned more about using commas, especially when a sentence lists a series of things. Here is an example: I ate a sandwich , an apple , some chips, and a banana for lunch.

Math

We continued to study strategies to help us with our addition facts to 20 this week. We focused on the “doubles +1” strategy and “If you know your 10's, you know your 9's” strategy. For example: 7+7=14 so 7+8=15 and 10+5=15 so 9+5=14.

Theme

We continued to learn more about map symbols and map keys this week. We also learned that maps can be drawn to scale and the map key can explain the scale. For example, on our Vermont map, the scale is1 inch =5 miles. On our world map, 1 inch =1,000 miles!

Other News

*We will be holding Parent/Teacher conferences on Monday, Nov. 19. Please call the office at 888-3101 to set up a time to meet with me if you haven't had a chance to do that yet.

Joe has been our Star of the Week !

We will be meeting a new classmate when we return from the Thanksgiving break! His name is Alek and he is moving here from Pennsylvania. Alek is visually impaired and we are preparing the classroom for his arrival.

Here is our Friday riddle:

If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring?

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
