Greetings families and friends! Here is the latest news from our classroom.

Literacy

The class started a new unit in Open Court this week. Our new theme is Kindness. This week’s story was Mushroom in the Rain by Mirra Ginsburg. In this story, an ant, a butterfly, a mouse and a rabbit all try to hide under a mushroom during a heavy rain storm. They learn that the mushroom grows as it soaks up the water from the rain. This story reminded many of us of The Mitten by Jan Brett because there was always just enough room under the mushroom for each animal.

We learned about the capitalization rules this week.
Our phonics lessons were on the “long u” sound spelled “u-e”, “ue”. “ew” and “u” ( as in the words cube, glue, flew and unicorn.)

Today, we continued to work on our cinquaine poems that we started a couple of weeks ago. Many of us were able to write our final copy of the poem using the laptop computers.

Math

We learned more about surveys this week. Each student chose a survey question and collected data about their question by surveying their classmates. They also chose a type of graph to represent their data. We learned about pictographs, bar graphs, tally chart graphs and pie charts. The students are now using a computer program called Graph Club to make their final survey presentation.

Theme

We have been learning about many different kinds of maps and about the globe in Social Studies. We read a big book called Me on the Map. Now we are making our own smaller version of that book.

Other News
