Happy
February! Here is the latest scoop from our classroom.
Literacy
This week's Open Court story was called How To Hide an Octopus and
Other Sea Creatures by Ruth Heller. This story had beautiful
illustrations of very interesting sea creatures. Did you know
that the octopus can change its color and can change its skin from
smooth to rough in order to be camouflaged?
We worked on words with the suffixes -er and -est. We also learned
that every complete sentence has two parts- a subject and a predicate.
We have also been working on writing a "How To..." book.
Examples of procedure books being written by the students include
"How To Take Care of a Dog" and How to Make a Scrambled
Egg".
Math
Our
focus during math this week has been on ordering and comparing numbers.
We have practiced putting numbers in order from least to greatest
and have also learned about the "greater than " (>)
and "less than" (<) signs.
Theme
We have enjoyed learning about all the wonderful creatures found
in the tropical rain forests of the world. We have learned that
this habitat is very important to all living things on earth because
so much of the earth's oxygen is produced in the rain forests. Did
you know that the basilisk lizard can actually run on water?
Other
News
Janice has been our Star of the Week!
We
enjoyed another interesting Four Winds lesson on teeth and skulls.
We learned that teeth can show whether an animal is a carnivore
(meat eater), an herbivore (a plant eater), or an omnivore (meat
and plant eater). Nico's mom, Kary, is now one of our volunteer
Four Winds teachers!
Here
is our Friday riddle:
What stays in the corner and can travel around the world?
Have
a wonderful weekend!
