Good day families and friends! Here is the latest news from our classroom. We have set it up in the different subject areas.

Literacy
We started our first unit in Open Court for Grade 2 this week. The theme for this unit is Sharing Stories. Our spelling words and phonics lessons focused on l-blends (such as block and glue). We read the story Ant and the Three Little Figs by Betsy Byars. In this story, Ant’s brother tries to read him the story of the Three Little Pigs but he keeps changing the pigs into different kinds of fruit. It was a funny story!
Today, we had our first spelling test. We also had a test on the vocabulary words from the story and questions to answer about this story.

Math
We continued to learn about the value of cuisenaire rods this week. We also started to practice addition facts to 10 using the cuisenaire rods. We have been working hard in our Skill Power workbook and many students are feeling more comfortable and self confident about showing their thinking when solving the problems in this workbook.

Theme
We completed our science theme on Life cycles today. This week we not only reviewed the life cycle of the butterfly, we also watched a video on the life cycle of the honey bee and one on frogs and toads. The four chrysalises in our classroom continue to be healthy and green!

Other News

Hannah was our first Star of the Week!  We celebrated Alex’s birthday on Monday since he wasn’t here last week on his official birthday. Colton celebrated his birthday during the first week of school! Happy Birthday to both of them! We had our first school assembly this afternoon. We were introduced to new students and teachers in our school and we sang some songs together.

Please find information regarding school pictures in the Friday Folders today. Pictures will be taken on September 19.

Have a fabulous weekend!
