1. Yoga

This gentle introduction to yoga class is designed to build strength,
flexibility and balance while connecting movement with breath.

2. Digital Photography

Learn the elements and fundamentals in a fun and hands-on setting.
Learn how to turn a camera into your best friend and create amazing art forms! We will work the basics and with different programs for manipulation of images, storage, transferring images, and printing options. We will create displayable work by the end of the semester! Come and join the fun!


3. Open Art

4. Farm Hands
Time: 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Location: HopeGrows Community Farm
Participation Fee: $35.00

Farm Hands will consist of two main jobs each week. The first hour will be trail maintenance and clearing (either in snowshoes or boots!) and the second hour will be focused on bringing the horses in for the evening, feeding and watering them. This program will get students outside, introduce them to working with the horses, and teach them the basics of running a farm!

5. Join Envirothon: North America’s Largest
High School Environmental Education
Competition

Time: 3:00-4:00 p.m.

Participation Fee: FREE

Have fun, get wet, and study the outdoors while learning about our
natural resources. Competitive? Good. Collaborative? Excellent. You
will work together as a PA Envirothon team to compete for awards and scholarships by demonstrating your knowledge about natural resources and their management. The competition is centered on four categories; soil and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, and wildlife, and a current issue which changes each year. The 2012 current issue is Nonpoint Source Pollution/Low Impact Development

Envirothon participants gain valuable knowledge and training in ecology and natural resource management principles and practices. Many students step away from the Envirothon experience excited about learning and motivated to pursue careers in environmental studies, environmental law, natural sciences, and natural resource management. Be part of Envirothon’s mission to develop knowledgeable, skilled, and dedicated citizens who are willing and prepared to work towards achieving a balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment. The competition is in the second week in May. We will meet for one hour every Tuesdays and/or Thursday. Science credit available.

6. Cryptozoology

Come and join Ms. Anderson in the study of mythic creatures! We will be delving deep into the histories and mysteries of such puzzlers as hippograffs, wyverns, yeti and werewolves. As dedicated cryptozoologists, it is our duty to learn about and educate others about these creatures and their habitats, domains, “eating” likes and dislikes, and responsibilities here on our planet! We will be creating models of our favorite “crypts” and maybe we will go to Lake Champlain to search for Champ. (He was sighted and filmed!) Exciting adventures await!

7. Scarlet Cinema

Come explore the world of monsters in film during the 20s, 30s, and 40s, the golden era of “Scarlet Cinema”; it is a fascinating genre with an interesting and tragic history. We will explore the evolution of film-making; watch movies, become acquainted with the actors, directors, special effects (quite different from today’s) and costumes.

8. Chess
Time: 3:00-4:00 p.m.

“Chess is the single most powerful education tool we have at the
moment”, said Ollie LeFrenier, statewide coordinator for scholastic
chess for the Washington Chess Federation. And we agree with him!
Join Mr. Speers as you learn to think and problem solve like a chess
player! And guess what? It’s fun!

9. High School Junior Iron Chef
(5th Annual)

Time: 3:00-5:00 p.m.
Dates: January 17-March 27
Grades: 9-12

Location: Peoples Academy Cafeteria
Participation Fee: $12.00

Jr Iron Chef is a statewide competition held on March 24. This class
teaches students the cooking skills necessary to participate in the
competition! This course gives students an opportunity to gain
hands-on experience preparing and cooking nutritious, farm-fresh
foods. We highlight local agriculture and encourage students to
make healthy eating choices and understand more about nutrition,
farm-fresh foods, the culinary arts and school food systems.

10. Introduction to Horse Care & Natural
Horsemanship Center for America’s
First Horse

Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m.
Dates: March 20-May 29 (9 weeks; no class on April 10)
Grades: 5-12
Instructor: Stephanie Lockhart
Location: The Center for America’s First Horse (students will be
transported to the Center but will need to be picked up there at 5:30.)
Participation Fee: $120.00

Learn how to take care of rare Spanish Mustangs and work with the
in a safe and fun environment at The Center for America’s First Horse in Johnson. Students will learn the basics of horse care including feeding, cleaning and farm tasks. The fundamentals of Natural Horsemanship, a method of training horses based on respect, trust and communication will be taught beginning with ground work, then progressing to developing riding skills. 11. Walking for Fun and Health!

Walking is a great way to get healthy, enjoy the outdoors, and meet new people. Come along with PAML’s own Jane Langdell as she leads you on walks around the community.

12. Introduction to Black and White
Photography

Time: 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Come and learn how to shoot black and white photographs, use the dark room and become a black and white photographer. This course is open to beginners and will be an exciting adventure!

13. Japanese Fan Club
Time: 3:00-4:00 p.m.

This class is for students who already love or who want to learn about Japan and Japanese culture. This class will explore Japanese language (learn greetings and a few phrases), Japanese cooking, and Japanese culture. Come on and join the fun!

14. Video Game Design/Development

Want to know a thing or two about making video games? This course can teach the process of making games with the GameMaker Program. Come to make video games and play created ones! GameMaker is an easy-to-use program and knowing some things about general technology can help you, too!

15. Learn To Play Hockey
Time: 3:30-5:00 p.m.
Dates: January 4, 18, and 25, February 8, 15, and 22

need to be picked up at Crew after practice)

Ultimate Hockey is a great opportunity to start playing an awesome
lifelong sport whether you just want to give it a try or prepare to play for the PA Wolves in high school. This course will help you develop skating and stick skills as well as understanding the rules and basics of ice hockey. As we learn we will play small (non contact!) games. No prior skating or hockey experience necessary. The instructor is a USA Hockey trained youth coach!

17. Snowshoeing

Location: Meet in the cafeteria: We will mostly snowshoe on the PA trails.
Participation Fee: $15.00 *Snowshoes available to borrow from PA!

Ever find that you are stuck indoors for most of winter? Well, this course will solve that! You will learn the basics of snowshoeing and get a great dose of fresh air and exercise each week. We look forward to seeing you!

18. Guitar Class

Students will learn the music fundamentals necessary to read and play music for the guitar. Students will need their own guitars for practice. This will be a fun group so come and play along with us.

19. Introduction to Russian Language
and Culture

Privyet from Russia! Join the Russian Language and Culture class and learn how to speak, write and eat the Russian way. Russia is an exciting place; come and join us as we immerse ourselves in Russian language, history and culture. Learn the Russian alphabet, write a letter, converse in Russian, and cook authentic Russian foods! Come and join the fun!

20. Graffiti Art

Express yourself in a subject that people sometimes look down on and make light of. Look past the vandalism graffiti is sometimes associated with and learn the art, culture, and lifestyle of this underrated art form. You will be taught how to paint real graffiti on legal areas, and learn the history of how graffiti was formed. It’s art class with a twist; instead of a paint brush you use a can.

22. Book Club

Ever joined a book club before? This group of five students will choose books that the group will read. Together we will read quietly, read aloud, draw pictures of the characters and scenes in the books, discuss the plots and characters, and mostly enjoy books!

23. Ceramics

An introduction to the joys of working with clay using hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques; students discover the endless possibilities and techniques of coil, slab, and pinch as well as explore functional poster and sculptural pots.

24. Swim for Fitness
Time: LEAVE PAML AT 3:00 and return by 4:45-5:00 p.m.
Dates: Three six-week sessions:
January 6 - February 10, March 9 – April 13, April 27- June 1
Grades: 7-8
Instructors: Swimming Hole Staff with driver/chaperone from PAML.
Participation Fee: $60.00 per six week session. $10.00 for students
whose families qualify for reduced lunch. Free for students whose
families qualify for free lunch. Scholarships are available: contact

Swimming for fitness can help improve a students’ focus on school work, improve time management, maintain their health and improve overall confidence. Learn and improve efficiency of the four competitive strokes, improve endurance, strength, and flexibility through cardiovascular training in the water. Student will also set goals and implement the steps to achieve those goals. And have fun in the water with friends!

25. Advanced Horse Care & Natural
Horsemanship Center for America’s
First Horse

Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m.
Dates: March 22-May 24 (9 weeks)
Grades: 5-12

Location: The Center for America’s First Horse. Students will be
transported to the Center but will need to be picked up there at 5:30.
Participation Fee: $120.00

Students in this course will develop a higher level of knowledge of
horse care, ground work, and riding. The focus will be on furthering
independent learning in care and riding. Opportunities for working with a variety of horses will be available. An application process for enrollment will be required. Students who completed the fall 2011 horse program are encouraged to apply. Those with prior horse experience from other facilities will be considered, with priority given to past or current students of The Center for America’s First Horse. 26. Manga-Anime Club

Come join a growing number of students interested in Japanese comics. Draw, talk about characters, and watch movies. You also have the chance to create your own characters and write story lines for them.

27. Fly Fishing and Fly Tying

In this fishing course, we will make our own fly rods from blanks. We will tie our own flies, then during the spring and summer you can use your new homemade gear to catch some fish!
