Hyjinx
Says Hello From Behind the TV Screen
By Alyx Sellars, Eighth Grader

Hyjinx Head Staffers Kayla Henry, Alyx Sellars,
and Katie LaMare rehearse their lines on more time before going
on air.
Hyjinx is now only three weeks away! Hyjinx is a community arts
festival that has happened at Peoples Academy for four years. This
time it is on Friday, May 16th from 4:00 to 10:00PM. Every year
the festival has many exiting activities for all ages, everything
from henna tattooing and button-making to delicious foods and great
art and entertainment. We also will host an amazing performance
by comedy actors Donny Osman and Chuck Meese with students from
our community. Space is still available to attend their after-school
workshops for youth ages 10-18 on May 8, 9, 14, and 15 from 3-4:30pm.
Please contact the Unbound office at 888-6725 or unbound@morrisville.org
to sign up.
Hyjinx will also feature a student Jam Stage, a concert under the
stars with the alternative rock band, The Dirtminers, and the Peoples
Academy Stage Company performance of “The Love of Three Oranges.”
Students from the Lamoille Valley can still sign up to perform at
Hyjinx by contacting Music Pro Peter Guihan at pguihan@morrisville.org
or calling 888-4600.
The filming of our annual commercial and talk show have now taken
place at the Green Mountain Technical and Career Center on Wednesday,
April 16th. Students Alyx Sellars, Kayla Henry, Katie LaMare, and
Emily Martin took part in the filming of the commercial. Alyx Sellars,
Kayla Henry, Katie LaMare also participated in the talk show along
with former PA student and Hyjinx originator Jessica Eno. Together
they went with Peoples Academy Projects Director and Hyjinx Leader
Dorinne Dorfman to meet the film director Tim Torry and his assistants.
Among tech crew was David Langevin, who was a Hyjinx staff member
in 2005. We spent the next few hours creating TV magic with few
mistakes and just a couple of retakes. Now the excitement intensifies
as we wonder and wait for the commercial and talk show to air. Look
for our message on Public Access Television in the days to come.
We share a behind the scenes view on Hyjinx’s history and
how it all came together this year.
Community Businesses, Organizations and Craftspeople WANTED for
Hyjinx!
By Peoples Academy Freshman Kayla Henry
and Dorinne Dorfman
Hyjinx is an event for all ages hosted by the students of Peoples
Academy to celebrate the arts and our community. Since 2004, community
businesspeople, organizations, artists, and craftspeople have exhibited
and sold their wares at Hyjinx, together creating a fun marketplace
for all to enjoy. It’s a place for people to “window
shop,” buy local goods, and network together with the backdrop
of an fun-filled family festival. With no exhibition fee and tables
and chairs provided, we especially encourage vendors to demonstrate
how their products are produced. In the past, our vendors have ranged
from bake sales for non-profit groups like childcare centers and
information booths for the nature center to fine foods, carpentry,
jewelry, pottery, cosmetics, and paintings for sale.
This year the Hyjinx lineup looks great! Rain or shine, on the grounds
of Peoples Academy, on Friday, May 16th, Hyjinx will happen, attracting
hundreds of people from all over the Lamoille Valley. With the market
of community vendors, plus arts and crafts activities for all ages
starting at 4pm, a jam stage of young talent will play in the background.
At 5:30pm actors Chuck Meese and Donny Osman will perform a comedy
show with PA students, after which the Peoples Academy Stage Company
will perform their spring production. Then at 8:30 a music band
will play under the stars, or the in gym, as happened last year
due to bad weather. In case it’s too cold or rains again,
all Hyjinx activities will be held inside so that all vendor booths
are well protected.
Hyjinx needs you! Show and sell! Businesspeople, organizations,
and artists – come and join the fun by becoming a vendor at
Hyjinx!
Contact Dorinne Dorfman at 888-6725 or dorinne.dorfman@morrisville.org
to register.
Set up time is on Friday, May 16th is at 2:45pm. Students will meet
vendors and help them set up for the big show. The deadline for
vendor registration is April 18, 2008, or when we’re full,
so sign up now!

Silk
Screening T-Shirts for Hyjinx
By Emily Martin, Hyjinx Student Representative
Emily Martin, Eliza Spaulding, and Anna McCormick
show a freshly screened print of the 2008 Hyjinx logo design, surrounded
by dozens of tie-dyed t-shirts.
Imagine going to an arts festival where there are fun and games, a
moon bounce, a concert and a whole lot more! My first time going to
Hyjinx, I had no idea what was in store for me. The thing I will always
remember were the awesome shirts the staff was wearing. Tie-dyed,
there was red-blue, red-yellow, blue-yellow, blue and red. I wanted
one right off the bat. This year I have volunteered for Hyjinx and
have finally earned a staff shirt of my own.
Recently, Dorinne Dorfman, supervisor of the Hyjinx committee, told
me we would not only tie-dye but silk-screen the shirts as well. I
had never heard of silk-screening and I’ll admit I was kind
of nervous. First we tied the shirts with hundreds and hundreds of
rubber bands and dyed them the usual colors. After 24 hours they were
washed and dried and ready for silk-screening.
The very first thing you have to do is find the design you want to
put on the t-shirt. Ninth grader Ashley Merchant, created this year’s
design, which consists of a hand with music notes surrounding it.
Then once you get your design, you have to cut it out of a lacquer
film with an X-acto knife exactly as the design looks. A week after
we had tie-dyed the shirts, we had set up a silk-screening system.
There were at least four of us working on it at a time, including
Anna McCormick, Mariah Bradley, Eliza Spaulding, Caroline Wells, Michelle
Lewia, Jessica Eno, Alyx Sellars, and myself over about six hours.
This may sound easy but it is tougher then you think. We first had
to make sure the design was on the EXACT spot of the shirt. Then one
person holds the sides of the wooden screen down while the other person
takes a squeegee and drags the ink across the stencil. Once that is
done, you lift the screen up and the print is done. After the front
of the shirt dried, we went onto the back of the shirts to add STAFF
for Hyjinx volunteers and HEAD STAFF for our committee. We repeated
this process like before 150 times – twice for each shirt –
then we were really done! Every volunteer, whether teachers, administrators,
parents, community members, and students receives a free t-shirt in
appreciation of their hard work.
Come see our beautiful shirts at the Hyjinx festival on Friday, May
16th from 4-10pm at Peoples Academy, rain or shine. For more information,
visit www.morrisville.org/hyjinx.
The Dirtminers
Rock Out at Hyjinx
By Eric Merriam, Peoples Academy Senior

Peoples Academy Senior Eric Merriam shows off the fun to come.
Hello friends. My name is Eric Merriam and I am here to tell you about
something great that’s happening in the near future. As the
weather gets warmer with every day, the days get longer, and the snow
starts melting, we all start getting excited for springtime. I can’t
think of a better way to celebrate the coming of spring than with
a festival. What kind of a festival you ask? Well, it’s hard
to categorize, because we have a little bit of everything.
Hyjinx is a community arts festival that has been held at Peoples
Academy since the spring of 2004. Organized mostly, if not entirely
by PA students, and the likes of Dorinne Dorfman a multi-talented
teacher/artist/intellectual, the festival is a warm, welcoming environment
where families and friends alike can come together for food, fun,
and entertainment. In the past we have been fortunate to have hosted
a few popular entertainers such as Bread and Puppet theatre, Jeh Kulu,
an African drum and dance group, as well as our local friend and hip
hop artist Jihad Shippe. This year, we have a few new plans in store.
As always, we will have games and activities for the young and old
who like to feel young. There will be delicious bread, baked hot and
fresh right from our own bread oven, compliments of PA French teacher,
Mr. Van Carr, et l’equipe des eleves francais. A great band
will be playing live, too. The Dirtminers, who I am going to tell
you all about here in a second, will be playing in the band shell
outside the school.
The Vermont-based rock band is made up of some seemingly interesting
dudes. I’ve gathered that this group is a little unpredictable,
and their style is very unique. They make a lot of sounds that you
wouldn’t hear in your everyday average Vermont rock band. The
lead singer, Raphael Worrick, has an amazingly eerie voice that chimes
in to sing typical rock and roll/blues lyrics about pretty girls,
the good times and the bad, and also some lyrical content that relates
to the lives of Vermonters. The rest of the band is as follows. Matt
Rogalsky is on bass, lap steel and an assortment of other stringed
instruments. Ron Rost plays on keyboard and organ. Jeff Labossiere
is the drummer, and word is that he can really bang out. Michael Corn
is said to be able to play every stringed instrument known to man.
Wayne Riess is not officially part of the band, but he sits in as
a guest on the piano once in a while. Hopefully we will be graced
by his jazzy presence at Hyjinx. Roger Stauss, the brains of the operation,
runs Animalville Records and the band’s sound tech. There are
a couple of other drum players, who may join The Dirtminers in Morrisville
as well. This is going to be a surprise for all of us, but one thing
is for sure, it will certainly be a pleasurable experience. Check
them out a www.dirtminers.com.
This is Hyjinx in a nutshell, whether you have been joined us in previous
years, or this is your first time, come along, because a festival
is always more exciting and enjoyable when there are a lot of people.
The greatest part is that mostly everyone here is going to be local,
so you might run into some old friends, or even make some new ones.
Entrance, activities, and events at Hyjinx are free of charge, thanks
to the generous support of the Vermont Arts Council, Vermont Rural
Partnership, PA’s Unbound, and the Vermont Department of Education.
Rain or shine, we will be out there and we hope to see you there on
Friday, May 16th 4-10pm. The Dirtminers will perform at 8:30pm in
Peoples Academy’s bandshell, or in case of rain, in PA’s
gymnasium.
