MULTIPLE PATHWAYS AT PEOPLES ACADEMY
DESCRIPTION OF CHOICES
Classroom-Based Courses
> A comprehensive array of classroom options for direct instuction.
Courses are designed to address Vermont's Framework of Standards
and Learning Opportunities. Content ares are divided into the following
departments: English, Social Studies, Science, Math, the Arts, and Physical
Education, and electives.
Individualized Studies
> An independent study designed by students, linked to the Vermont
Framework and based on their motivation and interests. Students can
study academic disciplines or elective subjects during the school day
or on their own time.
Community Based Learning
> An experiential, independent study designed by students in
which the learning takes place in the community, such as at a business
or organization.
Peoples Academy Advisory
> This pathway provides students the opportunity to engage in
mentored study supported by an intership experience two days per week.
A teacher-advisor supports this all-inclusive program. Class size is
limited to thirteen students.
Peoples Academy Carreer Academy of the Arts
> The PACAA offers students the opportunity to pursue an interest
in one or more of the arts, whether it is theatre, music, dance, visual
art, computer graphic design, etc., while still meeting the requirements
for high school graduation. Participants will attend academic classes
taught by Academy staff, designed to integrate the arts into the curriculum.
Interships, Individualized Studies, workshops, field trips and much
more will enrich the student's experience in the Academy. Applications
are available and should be completed and returned to the Guidance Office
no later than May 1 for admission into the Academy.
Capstone Project
> An academic structure for seniors to engage in a workplace
internship or service-learning project. Students earn more than 10 credits
through experiential learning, a study project, a comprehensive essay,
and an oral presentation.
Governor's Institute
> A week long summer residential program and short winter courses
in the Arts, Science and Technology, Asian Cultures, Engineering, Math,
Computer Science and Information Technology.
Record of Achievement
> This is a course offering instruction in develping an electronic
portfolio. This is an opportunity to record progress toward achievement
of state educational standards.
VAST: The Vermont Academy of Science and Technology
> VAST is based at Vermont Technical College in Randolph and
serves the interests of academically talented twelfth graders who have
a special interest and aptitude in math, science and/or technology,
VAST provides the opportunity to spend a year at VTC, completing both
high school requirements and the first year of an associate degree program
in a science or math.
College Coursework
> Students can earn credits for both high school and college
level by attending courses at CCV Morrisville, the University of Vermont
or Johnson State College. Courses may be taken on their campus, through
the Interactive Learning Network, or through the Internet. NOTE: Transporation,
tuition, books, and material costs are responsibility of student's family.
Upward Bound Science and Math Program at VTC
> A six-week summer residential experience at the Randolph campus.
Any student entering their sophomore, junior or senior year is eligible
to apply for free admission to this outstanding opportunity.
Upward Bound Program at JSC
> A six-week summer residential experience providing strong academic,
career, travel and college-oriented activities for first-generation
college-bound high school students.
The New England Job Corps
> Students age 16 or older can transfer to the Job Corps to complete
a vocational training in a wide range of occupations and an educational
component, plus earn a driver's license and financial incentives towards
employment. Students who successfully complete Job Corps are awarded
a Peoples Academy diploma.
Green Mountain Technical and Career Center
> 11th and 12th grade students can choose from 12 career technical
programs offered at GMTCC: Automotive Technology, Business Administration,
Computer Technology, Construction Technology, Culinary Arts, Forestry
& Land Management Technology, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning,
Industrial Mechanics, Marketing and Tourism, Manufacturing Technology,
Multimedia and Design, Technical Electronic, Health and Human Services
(Child Care, Cosmetology, Dental Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Veterinary
Assistant) and a PreTech Program for students in Grade 10.
